Local student wins state democracy competition

GOLDEN – Hanna Nelson, a senior at Eagle Valley High School, placed first in the Veterans of Foreign Wars state “Voice of Democracy” competition in Golden Saturday. Her winning audio essay, “How I Demonstrate My Freedom,” was sponsored by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Minturn. She competed against 14 other state finalists.She won a $1,000 scholarship and two trips, all-expenses paid, to Washington, D.C. and Valley Forge, Pa. sponsored by the Department of Colorado Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Minturn post.

In Valley Forge from June 29 to July 2, she will attend the “Spirit of America” youth conference at the America’s School for Citizenship Education at the Freedoms Foundation. The Washington trip will take place from March 5 to 8 and includes tours, meetings with heads of state and visits to theaters and monuments. While in the capital, Nelson also will compete for more than 62 national Veterans of Foreign Wars scholarships worth a total of $146,000.Nelson is captain of the Eagle Valley High School and a member of Devils Against Drinking and Drugs, Young Lions Club and 4-H. She also was the Beaver Creek rodeo queen in 2004 and 2005, and the Eagle County Fair and Rodeo queen in 2003.
