Local VFW post wins awards

MINTURN – Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10721 received two awards at the annual VFW statewide convention in Buena Vista in July. The VFW All State Post Commanders Award was given to Post Cmdr. Theron “Buddy” Sims who completed 25 years of active duty with the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marines. Buddy has been post commander since 2004 and has represented the post at many statewide and national VFW events. This VFW award was given to Sims for membership recruiting, service activities for veterans and participation in VFW National and local programs. Under his leadership, membership has doubled and the post has begun or completed projects such as an annual scholarship program, active color guard duty for community events and veterans’ funerals, Veterans Day assemblies for elementary and high schools, helping organize and construct the Freedom Park Memorial Flag Plaza in Edwards, and organizing a large contingent of veterans to lead the annual Vail July Fourth Parade.The VFW National Recognition Award was received by the post for outstanding post citizenship education programs and activities. The award was won by this post in recognition of demonstrating service to the Vail Valley by exhibiting a high level of performance and achievement. Vail, Colorado
