‘Lord of the Rings’ musician visits Vilar

BEAVER CREEK – As one of only two Colorado stops, Sir James Galway teams up with his wife, Lady Jeanne Galway and the Polish Chamber Orchestra to celebrate the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Galway and company will take to the Vilar Center stage on Monday, March 20, at 6:30 p.m. Galway is known around the world for his soundtrack to “Lord of the Rings, Return of the King.” This is the first time in 20 years that Sir James Galway will conduct and perform in a tour of the United States, that includes the Lincoln Center in New York City.Galway is known as “the man with the golden flute.” During illustrious career, Galway has made more than 60 recordings as a solo artist, selling more than 30 million records. Last year, he celebrated his 65th birthday.Prior to launching his solo career, Galway played for several orchestras and from 1969-1975, he served as Principal Flute for the Berlin Philharmonic. While he has not conducted a US tour in many years, Galway is the Principal Guest Conductor of the London Mozart Players and has received many honors including the President’s Merit Award from the Recording Academy, Billboard Magazine’s Record of the Year Award and Artist of the Year from Musical America.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England has honored Sir James Galway twice: in 1979 with an Order of the British Empire and in 2001 with a Knighthood for services to music.Lady Jeanne Galway, in addition to her successful career as a soloist, is an accomplished chamber musician who tours with the chamber music trio Zephyr, comprised of pianist Jonathan Feldman and cellist Darrett Adkins. Their first recording titled “Zephyr – Winds of Romance” includes works by Haydn, Martinu and Weber. Lady Jeanne also collaborates with a wide array of ensembles including guitarist, Christian Hoffstettler, the soprano Yuko Takemichi and the New York based Cassatt String Quartet. Renowned for her dedication to the development of young flutists, Lady Jeanne Galway is Vice President of Flutewise, an educational organization for young flute players. She frequently conducts Flutewise Master Classes and recently released a CD for Flutewise with Phillip Moll. Lady Jeanne is a native of New York and graduate of Mannes College of Music in Manhattan.The Polish Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1972 as an orchestra to accompany opera performances. Under the leadership of Jerzy Maksymiuk, the independent orchestra tours the world constantly and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Warsaw Autumn’s Orpheus, as well as prizes at the Poznan Spring Festival and the Wiener Floetenuhr for its recordings of Mozart.
