Lost hiker calls rescuers, says he’s OK

FORT COLLINS ” A 63-year-old hiker who was lost in rugged mountain country west of Fort Collins has called authorities on his cell phone to say he’s all right and to give his location.

Larimer County sheriff’s spokesman Eloise Campanella says Roger Baird told a sheriff’s dispatcher Thursday he wasn’t hurt.

Baird said he had spelled out “S.O.S” with logs and built a signal fire. He said he was near the intersection of two Forest Service roads.

It’s not clear how long it will take rescuers to reach him.

Family members reported him missing on Tuesday.

Searchers had been looking in the area around Pingree Park, where Colorado State University has a mountain campus.
