Malay Day set for terrain park
Vail Mountain team rider Josh Malay passed away earlier this winter while snowboarding in Spain. Vail will host the first annual “Malay Day,” Thursday, at Vail’s Golden Peak Terrain Park.
Highlighting the day will be the “Destroyer” contest to commemorate Malay’s goal to “destroy the mountain and everything on it.”
The day kicks off at 10 a.m. with a pipe jam, followed by a jump/jib jam at 12:30 p.m. One “destroyer” will be announced every 15 minutes and he or she will select snowboarding and skating gear from the prize table. At the conclusion of both jams, the best overall destroyer will receive a special prize. There will also be munchies, music and giveaways throughout the day.
Participants can register for the contest between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. at the Golden Peak Lodge. Cost is $20 and all proceeds benefit the Malay Memorial Fund. The contest is open to all ages, genders and disciplines, but parents of those under 18 must be present at registration to sign waivers.
