A man visiting the cafeteria at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette today accidentally shot himself in the leg when he reached into his pocket to pay for food.
The man “accidentally discharged a gun that was in his pocket” about noon today, said a statement from the hospital.
Hospital security officers disarmed the man and took him to the emergency room where he is being treated for his injuries, said Exempla Good Samaritan spokeswoman Kim Kobel.
No one else in the cafeteria was hurt.
Police are on the scene to investigate what happened and ensure the safety of patients, visitors and staff, she said.

“My understanding is that the man had a concealed weapon permit,” Kobel said.
