Man attacks Berlin pedestrians with knife, wounding 19
BERLIN – A knife-wielding man went on a rampage and attacked pedestrians as they left a Berlin celebration early Saturday, wounding wounding 19, four seriously, police said. The 17-year-old suspected attacker was arrested, police told The Associated Press. The man had mingled with crowds after a sound and light show inaugurating Berlin’s new central rail station in the heart of the capital when he began to randomly attack people. A police spokesman said several ambulances were at the scene.According to ARD television panic broke out among the people and 100 police officers were called to bring things under control. It was not known whether the attacker was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident, although ARD reported he was known to police. The rail station – complete with shopping mall – sits atop a new north-south tunnel through Berlin that will cut around half an hour off journey times to some destinations. It also straddles the traditional east-west route through the capital, leading national railway Deutsche Bahn to boast that “Europe is growing together here.”Construction took eight years and has cost an estimated $1 billion. Some 300,000 passengers a day are expected to use the station’s 14 platforms.Vail, Colorado
