Man breaks leg in backcountry slide near Vail

VAIL, Colorado ” A 42-year-old man caught in a backcountry avalanche near Vail broke his leg and needed search crews to help him off the mountain Monday, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man was skiing with a friend in the Ptarmigan area of Wearyman Spur between Shrine Mountain and Red Cliff when he was caught in an avalanche, the Sheriff’s Office said. His leg was broken in the slide.

The man secured his broken leg and called for help, the Sheriff’s Office said. Vail Mountain Rescue responded with help from Summit County Search and Rescue and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. The site of the avalanche is close to the border between Summit and Eagle counties.



Crews found the man and took him to Vail Valley Medical Center.
