Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado – A Leadville man died Thursday after his vehicle crossed the Interstate 70 median and the opposite lanes of traffic, slamming into an embankment near Eagle-Vail.
George E. Pupera, 76, was traveling eastbound on I-70 in a 2003 Chevrolet RV. The vehicle traveled into and across the median, across the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 and across the grassy divider where the left front of the vehicle collided with a post, according to the State Patrol. The Chevrolet continued through the divider and across the westbound 168 off ramp where the front of the vehicle collided with a rocky embankment, police said. The driver was transported by ambulance to Vail Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, police said. Excessive speed and alcohol are not suspected factors in this crash. The Colorado State Patrol and the Eagle County Coroner’s office are investigating the possibility that this crash may have been the result of a medical condition.
The Colorado State Patrol, Avon Police Department, Colorado Department of Transportation, Eagle River Fire Department, and Big Steve’s Towing responded to the scene.
