Man dies in Florida while fishing
LAYTON, Fla. (AP) ” Officials say a 73-year-old man died in the Florida Keys after falling overboard while trying to remove a fishing line that became tangled in his boat’s propeller.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Bobby Dube says Francisco Anaya was found dead by another boater about 9 miles north of Duck Key on Saturday.
Investigators say Anaya had gone out fishing with 85-year-old John Dernay.
Dernay, of Oak Creek, Colo., tried to rescue Anaya by throwing him a buoy and reaching him with a fishing pole. When that failed, Dernay entered the water but was unable to rescue Anaya or get himself back in the boat. Dernay spent about two hours in the water before being rescued by another boater.
Dube says Anaya’s apparent drowning is the fourth diving or boating death in the Keys in the past 10 days.
