Man dies in I-70 accident

Preston Utley/Vail DailyTraffic sits on eastbound Interstate 70 on Sunday in Avon. A fatal accident caused the closing of eastbound I-70 for more than two hours Sunday night.

A man died Sunday evening in a multi-car accident after he exited his parked SUV on Interstate 70 in Avon, police said.Four vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction crash at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday on eastbound I-70 either just before or after the pedestrian was struck, Avon Police Chief Jeff Layman said. The man died on the scene, and two women were transported to Vail Valley Medical Center with minor injuries, he said.

Eastbound I-70 was closed from 6:45-9 p.m. because of the accident. A snowstorm caused dangerous conditions on roads throughout the Vail Valley Sunday.Several other vehicles slid off the road following the initial collisions, Layman said.Layman said the man who died appeared to be traveling alone, and it was not clear why he exited his vehicle.

Layman did not know the identity of the man. Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis could not be reached for comment.The incident is under investigation by Avon Police and the Colorado State Patrol. The Eagle River Fire Protection District assisted with the accident.
