WOLCOTT – A 60-year-old Rhode Island man died Tuesday of injuries suffered when his motorcycle struck a dump truck on Highway 131 north of Wolcott. The accident happened at about 6:30 p.m. when Anthony Sliwkowski of Narragansett, R.I., crossed into the truck’s path, police said.Sliwkowski, who was riding a BMW motorcycle, was halfway through a right curve when he crossed the double yellow centerline and collided with the dump truck, a 1986 Mack driven by an Edwards man who was traveling north, police said. After the impact, the truck and the motorcycle traveled together across the southbound lanes for about 60 feet, police said. The vehicles continued off the west side of the road and Sliwkowski was ejected off the motorcycle, which then struck and embankment.Sliwkowski’s body was found next to the motorcycle, police said. The truck continued for another 30 feet off the west side of the road, drove up and over an embankment before it stopped.Sliwkowski was transported to the Vail Valley Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead from massive internal injuries, police said. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The 64-year-old driver of the dump truck, who was wearing a seat belt, wasn’t hurt in the crash. The Colorado State Patrol is investigating Tuesday’s crash, which caused the closure of the highway for more than two hours. State Patrol Capt. Barry Bratt said Miller hadn’t been charged with anything and the accident appeared to be caused by Sliwkowski.”The driver of the motorcycle, for whatever reason, couldn’t stay in the lane,” Bratt said.Staff writer Veronica Whitney can be reached at 949-0555, ext. 454 or vwhitney@vaildaily.com.
