GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” A Fort Collins kayaker died in Glenwood Canyon on Saturday, apparently from injuries suffered after falling out of his boat.

According to a spokesperson for Chief Deputy Coroner Steven Pollard, the victim was Jason Hansen, 30, of Fort Collins. The death was the first on the Colorado River in the area this season.

Hansen had been running rapids between Shoshone and No Name Saturday when, after several runs, he was thrown from the boat and injured, said Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario.

When rescuers reached Hansen, they detected signs of life and performed CPR, Vallario said. Hansen was transported to Valley View Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Vallario said Hansen was running the river as a member of a Fort Collins commercial group. Representatives of the company, Mountain Whitewater Descents, could not be reached for comment.
