BOULDER, Colo. – A man convicted of being the leader of a group that broke into cars parked at hiking trailheads to steal credit cards has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The Colorado Attorney General’s office said Friday that 37-year-old Ismael Lopez was part of a group of four that broke into the cars that were at parks in Boulder, Broomfield and Jefferson counties. Lopez previously pleaded guilty to violating the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act.

Lopez was sentenced in Boulder County District Court.

Prosecutors say Lopez and others would use the credit cards they stole from the cars to make purchases throughout Denver. Prosecutors say the group bought video games, electronics and food between July 2008 and September 2008.
