GOLDEN, Colo. – An Arvada man accused of dragging a horse behind a truck has been sentenced to five years of probation with intensive supervision.

A judge on Thursday ordered John Wilmarth McCulley not to have any contact with animals, and he must serve a year in the county jail work release program as part of the probation.

McCulley pleaded guilty in January to aggravated animal cruelty and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

A sentence in a separate case in which he was accused of attempting to fill fraudulent prescriptions in 2008 is running concurrently with the animal cruelty sentence.

He is due to be sentenced Wednesday in a 2007 case in which he pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.
