Daily staff report

BURNS — A 32-year-old man was shot dead in Burns on Friday, police said Tuesday.

A homeowner told police Friday that the tenant of an apartment on the property said he shot an intruder who was trying to break into the apartment, according to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said they found Brooks Hampton, of Burns, dead at the scene after they received the call at 9:25 p.m. Friday. County Coroner Kara Bettis said Hampton was shot in the face with a .40-caliber handgun.

At this time, no formal charges have been filed, police said. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
