DURANGO, Colo. ” A construction worker who pleaded guilty to stealing archaeological relics from Mesa Verde National Park while working there is banned from entering all national parks for three years, the National Park Service said.

A judge also ordered Robert Gee to pay a $2,000 fine and $1,000 in restitution to Mesa Verde, the park service said Friday. Gee must write a letter to local newspaper editors explaining his crime, his sentence and how his actions harmed national parks.

The park service said the investigation began in October. Officials said Gee violated the U.S. Archaeological Resources Protection Act by removing 252 artifacts from the park.

He was a contract employee for Kirkland Construction doing a repaving project in the park when the thefts occurred, the Durango Herald reported.
