Man survives backcountry avalanche in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – A backcountry skier was buried in two feet of snow by an avalanche triggered by other members of his party.

The Utah Avalanche Center says the man was blue in the face by the time the others dug him out.

The man recovered quickly from his ordeal.

The avalanche was accidentally triggered Sunday off Cardiac Ridge, which separates Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons in the Wasatch mountains just east of Salt Lake City.

The buried skier left a pole sticking out of the snow, which alerted others to his location. It took only a minute for him to be rescued.
