EAGLE COUNTY – The Georgia man charged with child abuse for punching a 14-year-old girl in the face at Beaver Creek in December has pled guilty to third-degree assault, a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Scott Filler, 41, told police after the incident that he thought the 14-year-old girl had been skiing carelessly when she bumped into Filler’s 4-year-old son, according to police reports.

Eagle County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike McWilliam said in police reports in December that Filler jumped on top of the girl and hit her in the face with his fist.

District Attorney Mark Hurlbert said the victim did not want Filler to be sent to jail, which is why the District Attorney’s Office pursued community service, anger-management classes and restitution as punishment.

“The judge sentenced him to anger management classes, restitution but gave him a $500 fee in lieu of community service,” Hurlbert said. “We are still awaiting restitution numbers from the victim.”
