Mangos Mountain Grill

Nicole Frey

You dont have to be a Red Cliff native to feel right at home at Mangos Mountain Grill. The painted smiling Rottweiler above the front door is the first to welcome you, but youre sure to see more happy faces inside the laid-back enclave.Grab a cupful of popcorn from the popcorn stand and meander through the three stories of Mangos, including a fabulous deck with gorgeous mountain views. The walls boast the innumerable music acts that have passed through Mangos doors, as well as the old-time greats that never got the chance to visit.

Avon resident Ben Schrader admits he never gave Mangos a chance because of its out-of-town locale. Then, after a day of mountain climbing in the area, a ravenous Schrader stumbled into Mangos and fell in love. I love the fish tacos, he says. Its overloaded and beautiful. They really have perfected it.Patrons swear its the white sauce that makes the fish tacos so irresistible, but dont ask the Mangos staff whats in it its a secret. With a menu overflowing with Mexican and American dishes, picking just one will be a challenge. The Quesa Grande a quesadilla of parmesan-crusted tortilla filled with green peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, black beans, jalapenos, onions and your choice of meat is the kind of plate you share if only so youll have room to taste something else. That something else should be the friend mac & cheese. Soft and creamy on the inside with a crunchy crust, its an appetizer youll come back for.Pair any of Mangos fare with one of the revitalizing house margaritas or deliciously spicy Bloody Marys (garnished with half the veggies in the kitchen) and youll swear youve entered Mangos Nirvana.

While the food is reason enough to head south to Mangos, the beautiful trip up scenic Highway 24 is another. Get seven or more of your friends together and the Mangos shuttle will pick you up from several points around the Vail Valley. The way gas prices are going, more people should really take advantage of it, says co-owner Eric Cregon. The views on the way up here are just epic. Its the best drive in the Vail Valley.NOTE: The breakout box makes it way too long, but you can decide if youd like to include all/any of it.
