Daily Staff Report
Vail CO, Colorado

Mardean K. Struve, 85, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sept. 6 following a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard.

She is survived by her son Craig of Vail and Windermere, Fla.

She was born Jan. 8, 1923 in Dysart, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Howard Struve, the love of her life, on July 24, 1943. After 47 years of marriage he died on Nov. 2, 1990.

Mardean lived a life filled with dignity, grace and humility. She was a caregiver for most of her life and cared for her husband through 30 years of illness, never thinking of herself. She shared her home with her mother and cared for her as well until her death at age 95. Through it all, she loved, taught and nurtured her son. Mardean imparted a knowledge and wisdom of selfless compassion that was admired by all who knew her. She was a voracious reader, a Western history buff and an avid traveler.

Apart from her family, Mardean’s greatest love was the beauty of the Rocky Mountain west and the Arizona desert. She believed that a meadow of wildflowers, a rushing mountain stream, the majesty of the mountains and a crisp, clear blue Colorado sky all brought her closer to her Creator. She had the same affinity for the desert grandeur and the colorful southwestern landscape.

She cherished her family and friends in the Midwest and loved her “second” family in Colorado who made her feel so special and welcome each year during her visits. She passed along a love, a spirit and a legacy to her son that is as enduring as the craggy mountain peaks she loved to travel through. Her loss is painful, but her memory will be never ending.

“When passing throug the doorways of life, people ask: Where are you from: I tell them from parents who care. I’ve been given life and set free. Thank you Mom and Dad for always loving me.”
