Maryan Forbes Hurtt passed away May 9 at her home in Sanibel, Fla.
A celebration of life will be held in her honor later this summer at her home in Vail.
Maryan was born 79 years ago in Cheyenne, Wyo. She was raised in Laramie, Wyo., where her father was a rancher and a banker. She attended the University of Wyoming and was on the ski race team. She completed her education at Bennington College in Vermont and earned a B.F.A. degree.
After college, she worked as an artist (textile designer) in New York City, and later in Denver. She was an avid skier and met her future husband, Caleb Hurtt, after skiing in Georgetown. Maryan and Caleb married in Laramie and raised their family in Littleton, Vail and Potomac, Md.
She was a Western girl, rodeo queen, member of Pi Beta Phi, college graduate, artist, 4-H leader, docent for the National Gallery of Art, and volunteer for schools, C.R.O.W. and Ding Darling. She published a children’s book, “Nepal: A Children’s Travelogue,” on her experiences in Nepal. She enjoyed biking, hiking, skiing, traveling and painting. Maryan had amazing energy and enthusiasm for life, an incredibly kind and generous spirit, and made every being feel valued. She was an amazing wife, sister, aunt, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend to so many.

Maryan is survived by her husband, Caleb; and their three children, six grandchildren and dog Lhotse.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maryan’s honor to Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival (vailmusicfestival.org) or C.R.O.W. (crowclinic.org) in Sanibel, Fla.
