Mechanical problems shut down Eagle Pool for remainder of summer

EAGLE — After discovering mechanical problems at the facility, Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District officials closed the Eagle Pool on Tuesday for the remainder of the summer.

"We have a leak in one of our pumps and one of our valves," Gypsum Recreation Center manager Scott Ruff said.

The issue actually was first discovered at Eagle Town Hall, where workers noted higher than normal water usage at the pool. Ruff said town engineers and public works personnel met with recreation district workers on site Monday and confirmed a sinkhole was forming in the pool deck area. The facility was shut down and excavators were at work Tuesday to uncover the leak and assess the damage.

At this point, Ruff said WECMRD has no cost estimates for the repair at the Eagle Pool, which opened in 2002.

WECMRD reached out to Eagle Pool pass holders via email to offer a solution.

"Your Eagle Pool & Ice Rink punch pass and summer family membership will be good at the Gypsum Creek Pool and the Gypsum Recreation Center," the email announced. "Swimming lessons have been moved to the Gypsum Rec Center through the rest of this week, as well as Saturday morning."

While WECMRD will honor Eagle passes at the Gypsum Recreation Center, the recreation district will not be offering refunds or credits for pass holders or swim lessons.

Ruff said Eagle pass holders will actually have expanded hours to use the Gypsum pools. The Eagle Pool was slated to start its modified hours on Aug. 17, when local school classes begin. Those modified hours were planned until Labor Day, when the pool would close for the season.

But the Eagle Pool is a popular hangout for local kids and families, Ruff said. He said WECMRD is aware closure notice will be a disappointment.

"Unfortunately, this not something we could have planned for," he said. "At the end of the day, we are doing our best to accommodate our users in Gypsum and Eagle."
