MEEKER ” Sheepherders from as far away as Switzerland, the Netherlands and South Africa convene in Meeker Sept. 5-9.

The 20th annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials draws international competitors for five days of sheepdog herding competition for a purse totaling $20,000.

Hosted annually in September, the Sheepdog Trials take place the first Wednesday through Sunday after Labor Day.

Associated events include a daily crafts fair, food booths, weekend pancake breakfasts, and a Sunday noon lamb barbecue. Entertainment also includes dog exhibitions and bagpipe music.

New for 2007, the event offers a premier spectator package, with lawn-chair seating for Saturday and Sunday in a private fenced off area and the Handler’s Dinner Ticket Friday evening.

The event field is located just west of Meeker on Highway 13. There is no shade and limited seating ” event organizers suggest attendees bring sunscreen, binoculars, umbrellas, and lawn chairs. Pets should be left at home.

Dry camping (no water or electricity) is available 1/2 mile from the trial site, within walking distance. For more information, e-mail to have requests forwarded to private property owners.
