Meese completes Teva music lineup in Vail
VAIL, Colorado The final piece of the puzzle has been put in place for the Bud Light Mountains of Music concerts in Vail, Colorado. The rock-infused pop sounds of Denver-based Meese will complete the musical trifecta of the Teva Mountain Games with a free show on June 5, along with special guests the Pete Kilpatrick Band. The vibrant band, featuring brothers Patrick and Nathan Meese will share the bill with Australian duo Tamarama (June 4) and freestyle hip hop pioneer Aceyalone and the Lonely Ones (June 6). All the concerts are free, take place at Checkpoint Charlie in Vail Village and start at 6 p.m.Music was a revelation for Patrick Meese, who developed an affinity for club drugs as a quiet Ohio youth in the late-90s. That addiction transplanted Patrick from the midwest to the west, and after an in-patient rehab program in Montana and boarding school in Idaho, he moved further south along the Rocky Mountains into Colorado in 2002 to study music at Colorado Christian University.Patrick fronted a number of Colorado bands as a drummer, guitarist, pianist and always the vocalist but it wasnt until early-2005 that his brother Nathan made the Ohio-Colorado trek and the idea behind Meese was solidified. Not long after Nathans arrival in Colorado, the brothers came across another local band, For the Holiday. Patrick and Nathan liked the group a lot especially drummer Benjamin Haley and guitarist Mike Ayars.Likewise, Haley and Ayars believed in Patricks music, and a few months later, they had joined the Meese fold. A year after the band first gelled, an early-2007 demo of the groups dynamic confection Tell Me Its Over became popular and, after flirting with various major labels, Meese signed with Atlantic Records in October of 2007.As it turns out, Meese would come together just as things were starting to happen in Denvers burgeoning music community. While the Fray had opened for Patricks previous band, it soon went multi-platinum and took Meese on tour with them.Patrick writes songs he would want to listen to.My whole philosophy behind songwriting is the oh feeling, Patrick says. And Im always trying to focus on having that oh moment in every song. Those moments come fast and furious in Meese songs, be it a clever turn of phrase or an unexpected chord change, a subtle bass line that steers the song into new territory or a careening vocal that grabs you by the shoulders and shakes you into a place of understanding. Patrick is inspired by life happening around him, but he finds much of his support from his bandmates, especially his brother. Its really about looking out for each other,Nathan said, but being brothers is hard, its a relationship. You have to work on it, and I know tons of people who arent close with their siblings or have bad blood, but were lucky enough to have played music together for our whole lives, since I was 9 and he was 10.But at the same time, were still brothers and so we still pick on each other and fight and beat each other up, Nathan adds. But the satisfaction from the little success that weve had so far is magnified because I get to do it with my brother. Its more rewarding that, suddenly, something weve been talking about since we were little kids is happening. The Portland Phoenix heralds Pete Kilpatrick as the new star of the Maine music scene and judging by the success he and his band have enjoyed over the past two years, the rest of the nation may soon find themselves smitten with the 23-year-old singer-songwriter as well.Having shared the stage with such artists as Guster, Gavin DeGraw, O.A.R., Ray Lamontagne, Better Than Ezra, Blues Traveler, the band has also sold more than 17,000 records independently. With ambitious material, juxtaposed with the sounds of 70s AM soul, the band cleverly weaves sounds that echo of early Hall & Oates, Travis and Incubus into a brand of rock unique to Kilpatrick and his co-conspirators.For more information on the Teva Mountain Games, visit http://www.tevamountaingames.com.
