Meet the king and queen of Ullr
BRECKENRIDGE – The 2006 Ullr King and Queen Suzie and Jerry Rawles might never have tied the knot if it weren’t for good snow.”It was a condition of our marriage, 47 years ago, that I learn to ski,” Suzie said.The retired couple moved to Breckenridge 10 years ago and are nearing the $25,000 donation mark to the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center.Jerry and Suzie are able to give so much because of their “cottage industry,” Suzie said. Jerry creates wind chimes by using old ski poles and Suzie paints them. The profits go to the BOEC. Appreciation for the snow runs in the family. Suzie says her three sons are some of the best skiers in Summit County. Their eldest son Scott is currently the coach of the U.S. Freestyle Moguls Team and sons Mike and Kirk are also skiers.Suzie also appreciates sunnier weather. She has been featured in the Summit County Garden Tour three times.The crowning of the Ullr King and Queen will be Monday night at the Gold Run Nordic Center, which is located at the Breckenridge Golf Course. It includes an indoor reception at 5:30 p.m. with food and beverages and is followed by a beginner friendly Nordic ski/snowshoe to the Ullr bonfire from 7-9 p.m.’Powder days – party nights’ Ullr Fest scheduleBRECKENRIDGE – The snow has been falling in Breckenridge this season with no signs of it letting up. Could Ullr, the Norse god of snow, be responsible? Now in its 43rd year, Ullr Fest’s fun and wacky antics are back to honor the god with a weeklong town party in Breckenridge. Here’s the schedule:- Budweiser Bar Series – All week long, Friday, Jan. 6 through Friday, Jan. 13. The bar series offers specials and giveaways at area bars and restaurants around Breckenridge. – Nordic Event and Ullr Bonfire – Monday, Jan. 9, 5:309 p.m. This popular local event is held at the Gold Run Nordic Center (located on the Breckenridge Golf Course) and includes an indoor reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. featuring food, beverages (free beer while it lasts) and the crowning of the Ullr King and Queen. The crowning is followed by a beginner friendly Nordic ski/snowshoe out to the Ullr bonfire from 79 p.m. Cocoa and cider are provided at the bonfire.- Ullr Skating Party – Tuesday, Jan. 10, 6:309 p.m. Skate with Ullr himself at the Stephen C West Ice Arena, 0189 Boreas Pass Road. Enjoy hot concessions for sale and $5 skate rentals. All proceeds from this event benefit the scholarship program of the Breckenridge Resort Chamber Ambassadors.- Ullympics – Wednesday, Jan. 11, 68 p.m. This crazy event features co-ed teams competing for fun and prizes in three zany events. A party follows with beer and prize giveaways. Join us at Carter park for a great time … and don’t forget to practice tossing that frying pan.- The Imperial Express Superchair Grand Opening Celebration – Thursday, Jan. 12, 10:30 a.m. New this year, Breckenridge Ski Resort boasts the highest chairlift in North America, reaching 12,840 feet and accessing 400 acres of famed expert and advanced intermediate terrain. Join the Grand Opening Celebration at 10:30 a.m. for prizes, entertainment and more. There will be special appearances by members of the Ullr Court. Celebration will be held at the base of the Imperial Express Superchair, above Chair 6 on Peak 8. For more information, call (970) 453-5000.- Ullr Parade – Thursday, Jan. 12, 4:30 p.m. The famous Ullr Parade launches from the Miners parking lot and proceeds south down Main Street, Breckenridge. The theme of this year’s Ullr Fest is “Powder Days – Party Nights.” Participation is free.- Ullr Comedy Night – Friday, Jan. 13, doors open at 7 p.m., opening act starts at 8 p.m. Join the fun(ny) at Beaver Run Resort and Conference Center. Laugh the night away with some of Denver’s funniest comedians, headlined by Steve “Mudflap” Magrue. Admission is $25, with proceeds benefitting The Carriage House.
