Meeting the wildlife
December 16, 2003
Be aware of the creatures that live in the wild. If you encounter wildlife, stand still and let it pass. Watch. Dont chase.
If you encounter a bear or mountain lion, STAY CALM. Do not run, and teach children not to run. Runners appear to be prey.
Look around to make sure you are not separating the animal from its young, then back away slowly, avoiding eye contact. Make yourself appear bigger.
For more information on wildlife encounters, look for brochures produced by the Division of Wildlife, or ask any park ranger.
