AVON 4/20 means a lot of things to a lot of people, some of which we wont elaborate on in this paper. But one thing nearly everyone can agree on enjoying is good ol rock n roll and barbecue both of which will be in plentiful supply at Loaded Joes second annual 4/20 Party, hosted by metal bands Defying Gravity and Death Rattle. We wanted to have a great end-of-season bash, says Defying Gravity guitarist Dan Renner. We like gigging, and all the bands playing are friends. That’s the basic thing trying to have fun for all ages. There are a lot of younger fans that dig the bands, and nobody does anything for the kids anymore. Both Defying Gravity and Death Rattle paid for the barbecue out of their own pockets and out of the goodness of their hearts and to draw people to the show, of course. We all got together and thought thatd be a good draw, says Death Rattle singer Joel Davis. Its a good idea to have some munchies for the people, and Defying Gravity talked to the owners (of Loaded Joes) and they wanted to do it again and maybe bring even more people. In the year since the first 4/20 party, Defying Gravity have been busy playing shows and recording an eight-song demo, which theyll have at the show.We might be on the Vans Warped Tour, says Renner. I dont want to curse ourselves, but Ive been e-mailing back and forth with the guys, so well see. Were also sending our demo out to a lot of people looking for a production company or a manager to help us out.Death Rattle, which rose from the ashes of local band Failed State, still count themselves as a fledgling band, but as soon as they find a bassist they plan to take the valley by storm.Once we find some (bass) talent we’ll record an album of 15 new songs, says Davis. We started just for fun, but now were really getting into it and want to get out there.Renner, ever the rock n roll salesman, assures rock fans that they wont be disappointed. The other bands that are playing are awesome, and we and our buddies in Death Rattle are buying $700 worth of barbecue just to give it away, Renner says. Come out, have fun and check out your local rock bands theres lots of wild stuff thatll be happening.People are starving for this kind of stuff.Arts & Entertainment writer Ted Alvarez can be reached at 748-2939 or talvarez@vaildaily.com.Vail Daily, Vail, Colorado
