BEAVER CREEK — The Vilar Performing Arts Center will present an evening of arias, duets and ensembles by some of opera’s greatest composers in the Metropolitan Opera Rising Stars Concert on Wednesday at 6:30p.m. For one evening only, a truly remarkable roster of young artists on the cusp of extraordinary careers will perform an engaging array of music from opera’s history.
For more than 125 years, the Metropolitan Opera has been the artistic home of the greatest singers in the world. But the Met is also the launching pad for the opera stars of the future. Some of today’s leading artists got their first big breaks by winning the company’s national auditions, as members of the young artist program or by catching the attention of Met talent scouts. Stephanie Blythe, Renee Fleming, Susan Graham, Deborah Voigt, Thomas Hampson and Mariusz Kwiecien are a few of the major artists to have come through the Met ranks.
Combined with larger-than-life stories and spectacular sets, opera marries the art of singing with the art of theatre like no other, and the Met has long been one of the standard bearers in the world. So when a young singer is selected into the Met’s young artist program or seizes the attention of one of the Met’s talent scouts, it can be the career break that launches a singer into the operatic stratosphere.
The new Metropolitan Opera Rising Stars Concert Series offers a rare opportunity for opera fans nationwide to be among the first to hear popular arias, duets and ensembles by opera’s greatest composers, as performed by the Met’s next generation of voices in an intimate recital setting. Just like the major stars that have preceded them, these young singers are dynamic, highly skilled and poised for greatness.
Fans of the Vilar’s regular opera programming are encouraged to purchase tickets soon, as previous offerings, including Puccini’s “Tosca” by Teatro Lirico D’Europa in January, have proven popular among patrons.
In addition to the concert on Wednesday, the Vail Valley Foundation’s STARS series will also present a show for grades four through eight on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
The STARS series of performances is offered to promote artistic, educational and cultural enrichment to local students, with in-school workshops and daytime shows at the theater. Each year, the Vail Valley Foundation and Vilar Performing Arts Center provide free transportation and tickets to more than 6,000 Eagle County students to expose them to the thrill of live performing arts. The Rising Stars program will make opera accessible and thrilling to students.
