Mildred “Mike” Louise (Shiflett) Toomer, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013. She passed away at Cross Roads Assisted Living in Rifle.
She was born Feb. 17, 1925 in Richmond, Va., to Pendleton and Mary Louise (Bowles) Shiflett. She grew up in Virginia and graduated from Farmville State Teachers College. She taught first and second grade in Portsmouth.
On June 30, 1951, Mike married Livingston “Wiss” Kennedy Toomer. In 1954 they moved to Burns, Colo., to a cow camp on the Benton Ranch, high in the mountains. In 1993, when the ranch sold, they moved to Gypsum. She retired after teaching for 20 years in Colorado.
In 2010, Mike moved to Cross Roads Assisted living. She thoroughly enjoyed her time there and greatly appreciated their loving care.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wiss; her three brothers Bobby, Pendleton and Thomas; and her sister “Shippy.”
