Minturn shooting range saved

MINTURN, Colorado ” The shooting range near Minturn will remain open after U.S. Forest Service officials wanted to close it because people left their trash there.

To keep it open the Minturn Shooter’s Association will clean the range monthly to keep it open, said Mathew Bayley, a local self-defense instructor who organized the effort.

“We have saved the range,” Bayley said.

Residents will meet Saturday at 9 a.m. for a couple hours to thoroughly clean the range, he said. Everyone is invited, he said.

People have left large appliances such as washing machines and dryers in the past at the range, officially known as the Two Elk Shooting Range.

The group also will start a Web site to show people how to build shooting targets and to provide information about how to keep the range clean, Bayley said.

Drive east on U.S. Highway 24 and turn left on Cemetery Road. The range is a little more than a mile past the cemetery. Do not take the left and right forks in the road.
