MINTURN, Colorado – Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy will add fifth grade to its program next year.

Academy Head of School Geoff Grimmer and Director of Admissions Carey Davis presented to a packed house of nearly 50 fifth-grade students and parents March 21 at the school in Minturn. VSSA Science and Master Teacher Miles McGeehan, Office Manager Holly Beavers, Science and Math Teacher Scott Hopkins, Language Arts Teacher Kelly Parish, Counselor Tad Davis, and Director of the Tutorial Program Kerry Donovan all dropped by to say hello.

In a partnership between Eagle County Schools and Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy was born four years ago and enrollment has jumped from 30 students in grades 9-12 during the 2007-08 school year to 90 students in grades 6-12 during the current school year.

In the new configuration, grades 5-8 will make up the “lower school” and grades 9-12 will make up the “upper school.”

Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy provides college preparatory academics while supporting the athletic and personal goals of students. A total of 27 credits, along with community service hours, are required for graduation. In addition to core curriculum classes, VSSA offers Dual Enrollment courses, Advanced Placement courses and a wide variety of electives.

During the spring and fall sessions, students are in school from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and taking part in their off-hill conditioning at Ski and Snowboard Club Vail from 3:30-6 p.m. The winter session looks a little different, as students may be traveling overseas to compete. If students are in-town, they are on the hill training from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and in school from 1:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.

“VSSA provided me with the amazing opportunity to stay focused on my academics while maintaining my momentum as a competitive athlete and reaching my dream of joining the U.S.A. Team at the 2010 Olympics,” said Faye Gulini, Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy senior and 2010 Olympic athlete.

Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy will hold another fifth grade informational session on April 4 at 4 p.m. at Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy in Minturn.
