Minturn votes on council, smoking ban
MINTURN – Eight candidates for Minturn Town Council and mayor square off Tuesday at the polls, where voters choose leaders to guide the town through what could be massive future growth. Also on Tuesday’s ballot is a question asking voters if they are in favor of regulations banning smoking at bars and restaurants, similar to the question Eagle County voters were asked in November. The issue on most resident’s minds is annexation of 5,300 acres of land south of town slated for development of a private ski resort, golf course and 1,700 homes. The incoming council will determine whether to annex the land into Minturn and review developer Bobby Ginn’s designs for the resort. The candidates are vying for four positions – three council spots and the mayoral seat. Council candidates are Shelley Bellm, Kristi Bloodworth, Kelly Brinkerhoff, incumbent Bill Burnett, David Clapp and Floyd Duran.Councilman George Brodin and incumbent Gordon “Hawkeye” Flaherty want to become mayor. If Brodin is elected mayor, a councilor will be appointed in his place.Councilors serve four years while the mayor is elected to a two-year term.If voters are in favor of a smoking ban, the town likely will enact a law eliminating smoking at bars, restaurants and public facilities. If the law is less restrictive – which it appears to be – than a statewide ban taking effect July 1, the town will follow state law.Staff Writer J.K.
