Mobile consulate caters to Mexicans
EAGLE – Throngs of Mexicans flooded to Capital Street in downtown Eagle to visit the mobile Mexican consulate Saturday. About 500 Mexicans renewed passports or applied for new ones and signed up for consular identification cards, cards that prove they are Mexican nationals, said Mariana Diaz, the consul for political and economic affairs, in charge of the mobile consulate. The Denver-based mobile consulate tries to make it to the High County once a year, Diaz said. “For a lot of our nationals, it’s very difficult to go to Denver,” she said. “Sometimes they don’t have a chance to miss work, so Saturday is an ideal time.”The mobile consulate visits about 10 cities in Colorado and Wyoming every year, and does not ask people about their immigration status in the United States. “Everything has gone smoothly today,” Diaz said.
