Moe’s Original BBQ in Eagle on Saturday will try to provide a little help to their friends in Asheville, North Carolina, with a “Carolina Throwdown” fundraiser.

The Moe’s store in Asheville’s Biltmore Village neighborhood was completely destroyed last month by flooding caused by Hurricane Helene. Moe’s founding partner Jeff Kennedy said not only was the building destroyed, but city officials have said a restaurant can’t be built on the site.

How to help

Besides the loss of the building, Kennedy said the store owners have also lost their home and their cars. But, he added, the owners and staff are all still alive and well.

To help the store owners get back on their feet, Moe’s in Eagle will host a fundraiser Saturday with food and drink specials. All proceeds from the day will be donated to the GoFundMe effort.  That effort hopes to raise $15,000. Kennedy acknowledged that the amount will “just be a drop in the hat,” but is a way to “bring our (local) community into the brand.”

Besides the Biltmore Village store, Kennedy said four other Moe’s stores in the area were affected by the storm but will recover. A second store in Asheville hopes to open within the next couple of weeks, he said.

The Biltmore store managed to salvage a portable smoker from the flood’s wreckage, and has donated it to “Operation BBQ Relief.” That smoker has helped feed people throughout Asheville and elsewhere in western North Carolina.

“Barbecue can feed a lot of people, and provide a sense of calm among the storm,” Kennedy said.

Helping communities in trouble is a long tradition for Moe’s. The company several years ago set up smokers to help feed folks in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the wake of devastating tornadoes there.

The GoFundMe effort, Kennedy said, “is just a little token from Vail.”
