DENVER, Colorado “-The White Wolf Media Group of Helena, Mont., the first and only group to publicly express an interest in buying the Rocky Mountain News, said today it plans to set up an office in Denver after sending representatives to visit the area over the past couple of months.

But owner Shawn White Wolf declined to say whether his group had put in a bid to buy the paper or what his Denver office would be doing.

“Still today, the White Wolf Media Group plans on not providing any statements regarding the Rocky Mountain News,” according to a news release issued by Wolf. “The media group believes that doing so would create unnecessary problems for all those involved in this process.”

E.W. Scripps put the Rocky up for sale Dec. 4, 2008, and Wolf soon expressed interest in buying the daily newspaper.

Scripps spokesman Tim King said today the company had no comment on Wolf’s latest news release.

Wolf previously acknowledged his group may not have the resources to purchase the Rocky and its 50 percent interest in the joint operating agreement with The Denver Post. He said he became interested in the Rocky through the newspaper’s coverage of the Sand Creek Massacre.

Wolf, a member of the Northern Cheyenne of Montana, is a former restaurant manager turned journalist. He worked as a reporter for the Independent Record in Helena and now runs a small media company. He also co-hosts a show on Helena Civic Television called Native View.

“After spending this past week in Denver, I have become very excited about the possibilities of headquartering our offices in this community,” Wolf said in his statement. He said the group planned to have a team in Denver over the next few weeks to start the process of obtaining office space and housing.
