Motorcycle accident lands man in ICU
Eagle-Vail resident Kevin Tate, 43, is in critical condition at Denver Health Medical Center’s intensive care unit after a motorcycle accident on Avon’s Metcalf Road Friday night.
Police suspect alcohol and speed were factors in the single-vehicle accident.
The 7:45 p.m. accident snarled traffic in and out of Wildridge because it occurred as up to 20,000 people were arriving in town to view Avon’s fireworks.
Tate was taken by ambulance to the Vail Valley Medical Center and later airlifted by helicopter to Denver.
Police reports indicate Tate was descending Metcalf Road and laid the bike down when he failed to make the first sharp left-hand corner about a mile from Nottingham Road. Speed limit in the area is 35 miles-per-hour.
Tate’s motorcycle cartwheeled for 250 feet before coming to rest. Tate came to rest 43 feet farther and struck a concrete barrier surrounding a construction site. He suffered massive head and internal injuries. He was not wearing a motorcycle helmet.
“It appears speed and alcohol were factors in the accident,” said Sgt. George Dingfelter of the Colorado State Patrol which assisted Avon Police with the accident scene investigation.
No other vehicle was involved in the accident.
