Mount Evans road closed for the season

The U.S. Forest Service has shut down the Mount Evans scenic byway for the season.

Forest rangers will reopen the road during next year’s Memorial Day weekend. The scenic byway is the highest-elevated paved road in the United States and often is visited by wildlife. Mount Evans has an elevation of more than 14,200 feet.

Rangers closed the Echo Lake station where visitors and tourists enter Mount Evans’ scenic route. The station is about 12 miles southwest of exit 240 on Interstate 70 in Clear Creek County.

However, rangers said tourists can still travel many other roads and trails that will remain open in the Clear Creek Ranger District.

Visitors can visit the Clear Creek Ranger District or call 303-567-3000 for more information.
