Mountains seek new ski patrollers
Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE COUNTY ” Beaver Creek and Vail mountains will be testing for new members of its ski patrol for next ski season.
Beaver Creek will test skiers, snowboarders and tele-skiers on March 24 and 31.
“We’ll be evaluating each candidate’s abilities in a variety of conditions, including steeps, crud, and powder. We’re looking for men and women with strong, solid abilities in all conditions ” not just finesse,” said Beaver Creek Ski Patrol Director Addy McCord.
The test begins with a meeting. The ski test consists of two to three runs taken in variable conditions and evaluated by four or five members of Beaver Creek’s ski patrol. Test results will be announced at the end of the meeting.
Those who pass the ski test will be invited to fill out an application and discuss further opportunities with Beaver Creek Patrol for the coming season. Hiring of patrol positions takes place each fall.
Vail Mountain’s ski tests, which are open to alpine and tele-skiers only, are March 25, 28, and 30.
“Working as a patroller at Vail is a rewarding experience and we have a very talented, supportive team that brings a variety of skills to the slopes,” said Chris “Mongo” Reeder, a 13-year veteran of the Vail Ski Patrol and test organizer. “The annual ski test is a great opportunity for interested skiers to join us for a day of evaluation and also ask questions and learn more about the patrolling experience.”
Skiers who pass Vail’s test must plan to attend the four-day Vail Ski Patrol Academy, on March 31- April 1 and April 7-8. At the academy, participants learn first aid, how to ski with toboggans, evacuate lifts and do avalanche control work.
Among other tasks, ski patrollers open and close the mountain each day, provide emergency medical care, enforce the rules of the mountain and help guests.
