VAIL, Colorado – He’s known for his charismatic wit and charm. His warm personality has made him an audience favorite in Vail, Colorado. His name is Bramwell Tovey, and he’ll be bringing his colorful personality to the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater stage Wednesday night.

Maestro Bramwell Tovey leads the New York Philharmonic in an evening of festive classics 6 p.m. Wednesday presented by the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. Works by Berlioz, Bizet, Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky will be performed. Tickets are $23, $63 or $85 depending on seating. Children 12 and under receive free lawn admission. Tickets are available at 877-812-5700 or http://www.vailmusicfestival.org.

Tovey had the audience rolling in laughter during Sunday night’s New York Philharmonic concert, said Lynne Mazza, associate artistic director for Bravo, and he’ll be sure to make an equal impression tonight.

How can a conductor have this joyful effect on concert goers?

“It’s simple,” said Mazza, “Bramwell keeps the audience engaged, entertained and is just plain funny.”

The concert begins with Berlioz’s Le Corsaire Overture, an energetic and infectious passage for strings and is followed by Bizet’s Selections for Carmen: March of the Toreadors, Habanera, Seguidilla. Guest Mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves joins the orchestra as the vocalist for this famous French opera.

Next in the program are two works by Saint-Saëns from Samson and Deliah, a romantic opera between two star-crossed lovers.

“The Bacchanale, one of the orchestral interludes, has become so familiar that it could be relegated to the realm of pop-orchestral compositions,” said Mazza. “The emotional content of the music is totally seductive.”

Following intermission is Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy Overture. Another love story that will be performed with intense and tragic chords by the orchestra.
