VAIL – Uma Fitness in Edwards will offer new by-donation yoga and meditation program starting Nov. 1.

“We are excited to offer our services for what people can afford,” said Karen Anderson, local yoga and meditation teacher. “It’s a great foundation for people to get together and practice, in the spirit of becoming more generous and happy.”

Yoga classes will be taught by Eric Lavigne and Anderson, long-time locals and yoga instructors. Both have trained and practiced extensively in traditional systems of yoga. Lavigne will teach Tuesday nights from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and he will give 100 percent of donations to locals in need. Anderson will teach Thursday nights, also from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Suggested donation is $10 to help pay for the space and support the program. “Donation yoga isn’t free yoga,” said Anderson, “It’s yoga where nobody is turned away for financial reasons. This model is already being used successfully in studios around the country.”

Meditation classes will be led by Fred Hammond, Anderson and other senior students of the Vail Mindfulness Meditation Center. All of the instructors have done multiple month-long silent meditation retreats under the direction of experienced teacher Michael Gregory. Classes are Sunday mornings from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and include a guided meditation, talk and discussion. “Meditating and discussing your questions with an experienced group is the best way to kick-start your meditation practice,” Anderson said. “It keeps you going, and helps you to realize that everyone has the same obstacles – and that there are methods to help.”

Suggested donation for the meditation is $15, but don’t let finances stand in the way of coming, organizers said.
