New Colorado oil, gas rules take effect
DENVER, Colorado ” Colorado’s long-debated oil and gas rules have taken effect in most areas ” but there are more to come.
The rules carry out laws requiring regulators to give more weight to the environment, public health and safety and wildlife when they approve oil and gas development.
The Legislature approved the rules despite objections, mostly from Republicans, that they will hurt the industry.
They went into effect on private land Wednesday. They are supposed to take effect on federal land on May 1, but that will likely be delayed while state and federal officials sort out overlapping regulations.
A few issues remain unresolved for private land as well, including how far rigs must be from occupied buildings and what the standards will be for reclaiming well sites.
