New evening market coming to downtown Carbondale

CARBONDALE – Downtown Carbondale will be abuzz with activity longer into the evening on Wednesdays this summer with the addition of the new Main Street Market & Artist Bazaar.The evening market will be in addition to the daytime farmer’s market, with takes place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. each Wednesday throughout the summer and fall, featuring a variety of commercial growers and vendors on hand selling everything from fresh produce to baked goods.In contrast, the focus of the evening market will be on local backyard gardeners, artists and musicians, Carbondale Recreation Director Jeff Jackel said.”The idea behind the Main Street Market is to encourage local citizens and visitors to spend a weekday evening in colorful downtown Carbondale, eating in local restaurants and enjoying a convenient and fun way to shop for fresh food goods and unique crafts,” he said. “It’s also a wonderful way to mingle with friends and neighbors.”The evening market will take place from 4-8 p.m. June 23 through Aug. 25.Booth fee is $100, and artists may share a booth space. Vendor applications are available now at the Carbondale Recreation & Community Center, 567 Colorado Ave. The deadline to return completed applications is June 4.All homemade products sold must be Colorado made, grown and produced, Jackel said.This can include local backyard gardeners growing fresh conventional and organic produce. Other possible vendors could include organic flowers, fresh hot chili peppers, jellies and jams, hand crafted wines, local beef, elk and buffalo meat, homemade pastries, pies and cakes.”Applications will be screened to make sure the market includes a variety of products from a variety of vendors in any given week, not only to give the consumer exciting and unique choices, but to limit the amount of competition for vendors,” Jackel explained. “And there will be a number of transient vendors, dependent upon space, who may be allowed to come and go throughout the summer, only offering their products and wares for one or two weeks.”A special section of the market will also allow a weekly booth rental of $20 for local vendors to sell antiques, vintage and retro distinctive wares.”This may include furniture, housewares, clothing, outdoor and garden items, architectural pieces, art, books and music,” Jackel said.Local musicians will also be performing weekly.”We hope that it will become a fun community social event, with great music, and as a place to find the coolest gifts and sundries and the freshest food products around,” Jackel said.For more information about the Carbondale Main Street Market & Artist Bazaar, or to pick up a booth application, stop by or call the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center at 704-4190.
