New recycling facility planned

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado ” Commissioners are expected to approve the construction for a new recycling facility in Wolcott next Tuesday and are looking for public input.

Landfill and construction staff will present plans for the new facility at the meeting.

The facility will be 14,000 square feet and cost $5.8 million to build including equipment and design, said county construction manager Rick Ullom.

The county wants to hire Menendez Architects from Aspen and Shaw Construction for the project. The plan is to break ground on the project in November and have the facility open by next summer, Ullom said.

The new facility will allow the county to sort all recyclables and ship them out, said Landfill Manager Ron Rasnic.

The amount of money that can be received for recycled materials depends on how well it is sorted, and right now the county has to ship all recycling elsewhere to be sorted, which is an expensive process, Rasnic said.

“We expect to increase the amount of materials recycled,” he said. “And there will be opportunities for Eagle and Gypsum to do a curbside program of their own.”

Surrounding counties may also ship their recycling to Eagle County to be sorted, he said.
