Three homes caught fire Friday afternoon near the intersection of Springs Valley Road and Colorado 82 south of Glenwood Springs.
One of the houses was destroyed, but Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District Chief Ron Leach said a second one was saved after suffering extensive damage. Flames reached the roof of a third home, but fire crews did not believe the interior was damaged.
Occupants of the buildings escaped without injury, Leach said.
Crews got the call at 1:46 p.m. Because of gusty winds, the fire in the first home spread to the two other homes and started a brush fire. Crews were able to knock down the brush fire.
“With all this wind and dry brush, I’m amazed the whole hillside isn’t on fire right now,” Tony Fotopulos, owner of the home that was damaged but saved, said as he watched the fire wind down.

He said a friend called him at work to warn him that his neighbor’s house was on fire, and by the time he and his wife got home, firefighters were putting out flames on the side of their house.
Despite being adjacent to Colorado 82, traffic continued to flow on the highway with Garfield County authorities directing traffic. The cause was not immediately known.
Crews from Snowmass, Basalt, Glenwood Springs and Colorado River Fire helped combat the blaze.
