No serious injuries after train derails in Westminster

Associated Press
Vail, CO Colorado

WESTMINSTER, Colorado ” No serious injuries are reported after a BNSF train carrying lumber and building materials derailed in Westminster.

Police say one of the train’s four locomotives hit “tree debris” of some kind that was on the tracks. That caused several of the freight train’s 37 cars to derail at about 10:35 p.m. Monday.

Authorities aren’t sure whether the locomotive hit a tree trunk or stump — or whether someone may have placed the debris on the tracks intentionally.

Westminster Police Investigator Trevor Materasso says three people were on the train at the time. One was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Fire crews were able to quickly stop a small leak from one of the locomotive’s fuel tanks. A BNSF spokesman says the line through Westminster could be closed for several more hours. Trains are being rerouted farther east.
