No weekend skiing after all on Aspen Mountain

Janet Urquhart/The Aspen TimesThough there's still snow on Aspen Mountain, there isn't enough for lift-served skiing this weekend, according to an Aspen Skiing Co. executive.

ASPEN – Warm, windy conditions have put an end to hopes of lift-served skiing for the coming weekend on Aspen Mountain.

The Aspen Skiing Co. had been doing some grooming in an attempt to preserve the snow at the top of the mountain for some Memorial Day weekend skiing, but last weekend’s weather broke the connection between the ski area summit and the bottom of the Ajax Express chairlift, according to David Perry, Skico senior vice president.

The snow has given way to brown patches of earth near the bottom terminus of the Ajax Express lift, he told the Aspen Chamber Resort Association board of directors on Tuesday.

The plan had been to allow skiers and boarders to ride up and download on the gondola, accessing the snow up top via the Ajax Express lift.

Determined skiers and riders can still hike up the mountain and find some turns up top, Perry said.
