Nominating petition of Vail Council seat ready Monday

The petitions may be picked up in the Vail Town Clerk’s office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Vail Municipal Building, 75 S. Frontage Rd.

Candidates will have until 5 p.m., Dec. 26, to circulate and return the nominating petitions. A minimum of 10 valid signatures from registered voters in Vail is required for certification.

The town’s Jan. 27 special municipal election will fill the term of a seat held by Ludwig Kurz, who will become term-limited after serving eight consecutive years, four of them as mayor. Kurz was originally elected during a special election in Feb. 1996 to replace Peggy Osterfoss who resigned in the middle of her term.



The Town Charter prohibits council members from serving more than eight consecutive years at one time.

To qualify for the upcoming Vail Town Council election, candidates

must:

– A citizen of the United States

– A registered voter within Vail

– At least 21 years of age

– A Vail resident for two years immediately proceeding the election

Town elections are non-partisan. In accordance with the town’s charter, the candidate who wins the special election will serve the remaining balance of the term vacated by Kurz, which will expire November 2005.

To be eligible to vote in Vail’s Jan. 27 election, residents must be registered with the Eagle County Clerk and Recorder’s Office by Dec. 29. Early voting begins Jan. 15 and the last day to request an absentee ballot is Jan. 23.

The special election will take place at the Vail Municipal Building, 75 South Frontage Road, for all Vail voters.
