Cancer claims Lorrie Lopes-Wagner, 43

Friends say those who knew Lorrie Lopes-Wagner were drawn to her warmth, character and strength of spirit.

After a long battle with breast cancer, Lorrie Lopes-Wagner died early on the morning of Jan. 4. She was at home in the company of her husband and family.

Born in Dallas, Tex., Sept. 26, 1960 and a former longtime resident of Los Angeles, Wagner and husband Robert moved to Minturn in 2001 and to Edwards in 2003. Last employed by 1st Bank of Vail, she had a long career in banking, sales and management.

Friends say those who knew Lorrie were drawn to her warmth, character and strength of spirit. They say her main joy in life was interaction with people, and everyone who knew her was touched and inspired by her courage, insight and vibrant sense of humor.

Fiercely loyal to friends, she was an avid scuba diver and world traveler. She loved art, music and Steve McQueen, friends and family members say.

Lopes-Wagner is survived by her husband Robert Wagner; sister Annette McCorkle and brother-in-law Mack McCorkle, formerly of Edwards; brothers Tony, Thom and Lenny; several nieces and nephews and hundreds of friends.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m., Jan. 17, in the Vilar Center for the Arts in Beaver Creek. A reception to follow the memorial service will be held at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center in Edwards.

A memorial fund has been established at 1st Bank of Colorado. Donations should be mailed to 1st Bank, 17 Vail Road, Vail, Colo., 81657. Please make checks to Robert J. Wagner and reference the Lorrie Lopes-Wagner Memorial Fund.
