Carol Marie (Darland) Holmes, the mother of a local woman, died Tuesday at her home in Longmont. She was 76.

Holmes was born Sept. 30, 1928 to Leo and Florence (Earcrett) Darland in Hastings, Iowa. She was raised in the Sidney, Iowa area and graduated from Sidney High School in 1946.

Following graduation she went to work in the general office for Brown’s Shoe Fit Company, where she met her husband, L. Paul Holmes.

The couple married on Sept. 18, 1949 and celebrated 52 years together prior to his death in 2002. The family moved to Longmont shortly after their wedding in 1949.

For more than 40 years, Holmes could often be found helping out at her husband’s business ” Brown’s Shoe Fit Company on Main Street in Longmont. He was the store’s manager for 42 years.

For 55 years, Holmes was a dedicated member of First Lutheran Church and she volunteered her time and talents to many activities, friends and family members say.

She was known as a wonderful cook and a talented craftswoman who created intricate counted cross-stitch and embroidery projects, friends and family members say.

Only two weeks ago, her talents were on display when her children and grandchildren all gathered in Longmont to celebrate Christmas. She filled the table with traditional Swedish food and filled the stockings she had painstakingly made for each family member, friends and family members say.

In addition to her crafting, Holmes enjoyed reading and playing bridge, and she was an exceedingly loyal Denver Broncos fan. She will be missed by a wide circle of friends, whose companionship she treasured, friends and family members say.

Holmes was preceded in death by her husband, Paul.

She is survived by her son, Michael Holmes and his wife, Cheryl, of Concordia, Kan.; her daughters, Diane Wagner and her husband, Steve, of Pleasanton, Calif., and Pamela Boyd and her husband, John, of Eagle; grandchildren Adam, Rachel, Stephanie, Christina, Emily and Eric; and four sisters, Mildred Miller of Shenandoah, Iowa, Ruth Chandler of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Helen Richards of Sidney, Iowa and Phyllis Ketcham of Shenandoah, Iowa.

Visitation hours are today from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Howe Mortuary in Longmont, with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The casket will remain closed at services.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday at First Lutheran Church, 803 3rd Ave., Longmont, with Pastor Steve Berke officiating. Interment will follow at the Ryssby Cemetery, also in Longmont.
